  Independent tests by the Gemological Institute show tungsten retaining 98% polish after 10,000 cycles against abrasive cloth, versus gold’s 40%.
  
  But hardness brings brittleness. Under sudden high impact,
  energy has nowhere to dissipate—WC fractures cleanly rather
  than bending. Dropping a ring on tile likely causes no harm;
  crushing it in a hydraulic press shatters it like glass. This is why emergency rooms use vice-grip crackers for removal, not cutters.
  
  Corrosion resistance is another win. Tungsten carbide ignores sweat,
  saltwater, or chlorine—unlike silver which tarnishes or gold alloys which pit.
  Only aqua regia (nitric + hydrochloric acid) dissolves it, irrelevant to daily
  life.
  Innovations continue. Nanograin tungsten reduces brittleness
  while maintaining hardness. Cemented carbide variants replace
  cobalt with nickel for allergy-free rings. Black tungsten uses titanium-aluminum-nitride
  coatings harder than the base metal.
